Coloring Sheets for the Same Subtraction Facts

A color-by-number sheet asks for the same recall and holds a reluctant child longer. Each one prints with its own answer key:

How to Use a Subtraction Worksheet Well

  1. Ask for the addition partner first. Most children recall 8 + 7 long before they recall 15 - 8, and naming the partner out loud turns the subtraction into something they already know.
  2. Expect "Across 10" to be slower. 15 - 8 needs the ten broken apart; 18 - 4 does not. If one group on the sheet drags, check whether it is that one before assuming the whole operation is weak.
  3. Move the circled facts into retrieval practice. Counting back down a number line is the habit worth replacing; 2 to 5 minutes of spaced repetition is what actually speeds them up.
  4. Print "From 10" beside "Making 10" from the addition generator. They are the same nine facts read in both directions, and seeing the pair on one sitting is what makes the link stick.

The ones where you cannot take the smaller number out of the ones place, such as 15 - 8 or 13 - 6. The child has to break the ten apart. They are reliably the slowest subtraction facts and they have their own group here.

Addition can be done by counting on, which is slow but reliable. Subtraction by counting back is error-prone, so a child who never moved past counting stalls here first. The fix is usually the addition partner: name 8 + 7 = 15 and 15 - 8 follows.

Because the group you picked does not hold 12 facts. "From 10" has nine and the halved doubles have ten. The sheet prints each fact once rather than repeating one to fill the page — a repeat is not extra practice. Pick a second group for a longer sheet.

Yes. Every subtraction fact here is an addition fact read backwards. "From 10" is "Making 10" on the addition generator, using the same nine pairs.

Yes. Print as many copies as you need. Press "Generate another version" between prints if you want each student to get a different set of problems.
