Dividing by 5 Without Guessing
Turn the fact around. Division questions are answered from the multiplication fact you already know, not from a separate list. Read 30 ÷ 5 as "5 times what makes 30?" — the answer is 6, because 5 × 6 = 30.
The same move works on the ones that stay slow. 45 ÷ 5 is "5 times what makes 45?" — and 5 × 9 = 45, so the answer is 9. A child who hesitates here is usually missing the multiplication fact, not the division one. That is the fact worth practising.
The quick check. If it ends in 0 or 5, it divides by 5. Nothing else needs checking.
Where it shows up. Counting money in fives, and reading minutes on a clock face. Both give instant feedback on a wrong answer.
The slowest fact. Rarely anything. Dividing by 5 is usually the first division a child owns completely, which makes it a good confidence rebuild.

- 40 ÷ 5 = 8
From the fact family 5 × 8 = 40 — also practice 40 ÷ 8 = 5.
- 45 ÷ 5 = 9
From the fact family 5 × 9 = 45 — also practice 45 ÷ 9 = 5.
- 60 ÷ 5 = 12
From the fact family 5 × 12 = 60 — also practice 60 ÷ 12 = 5.
Fact Families
Division facts are multiplication facts run backwards: 5 × 8 = 40 means 40 ÷ 5 = 8 and 40 ÷ 8 = 5. This matters because kids often drill division as a separate list, then freeze on a fact whose multiplication partner they already know cold.
If dividing by 5 feels shaky, warm up on the 5 times table first. After this page feels easy, go to mixed division facts practice and mix the ÷5s with nearby divisors.

If it ends in 0 or 5, it divides by 5. Nothing else needs checking.
Rarely anything. Dividing by 5 is usually the first division a child owns completely, which makes it a good confidence rebuild.
Yes. Each fact family covers three facts at once: 5 × 8 = 40, 40 ÷ 5 = 8, and 40 ÷ 8 = 5. If the 5 times table is solid, dividing by 5 is the same recall run backwards.
