Division Is Multiplication Run Backwards

The Common Core 3.OA.C.7 standard expects students to multiply and divide within 100 fluently by the end of Grade 3. In plain parent language: a child who knows 6 × 7 = 42 should also produce 42 ÷ 7 = 6 without skip-counting back through the table.

That is why mixed division practice matters. Fact-family drills teach the inversion; a mixed set checks whether the inversion is automatic when the divisor keeps changing — which is how division shows up in fractions, remainders, and long division.

Why Division Lags Multiplication

Division usually trails the matching multiplication facts by about a month, and that gap is normal. Recalling 7 × 6 is one step. Recalling 42 ÷ 7 asks the child to search for the missing factor, which is a slower move until the fact family is solid.

This is why a child can look fluent in multiplication and stall on long division. The facts underneath are there; the reverse lookup is not automatic yet.

The fix is to practise both directions of the same fact family together, rather than treating division as a separate list to memorise from scratch.
